Have you noticed that the products you are used to buying, whether food, clothing, or appliances, have not only been more expensive, but the quality has declined?

I shop every week for groceries, so I know how much the prices have skyrocketed. But I also know that I have to search through the items to make sure the produce is not already spoiling. Paying four dollars for rotten asparagus is doubly upsetting.

Writing shouldn’t be cheap. As writers, we know the skills and quality we bring to the table. Authentic writers are separate from the counterfeit writers who know how to use technology to make fast money, who cheat their way toward writing books and content.

Since books — and probably writing itself — appeared, there has always been a problem with stealing from other writers. Whether pulling text from books, or stealing content from the internet when that appeared, to now using AI, using others’ work is simply cheating. It won’t stop, but businesses especially need to be aware of what they’re paying for and the potential copyright lawsuits they might face.

What is quality writing?

Quality writing is original. It takes time to create accurate, authentic, meaningful content. And that is because the human writer is thinking about the human audience. Humans relate to each other. We understand emotions. Our writing reflects the depth of that understanding.

Marketing, sales, creative content — all of these require compassion and empathy to “talk” to our audience through our writing.

Technology has its use, including AI. I am, after all, typing this on a computer and using social media and the internet to get out the information. And at times, technology can lighten our workload. But, in the end, unlike technology, we have a conscience. We can decide whether we will cheat others or not.

AI, including ChatGPT, is cheap (even free at times) and is fast. You don’t have to train it because it has pulled the information from the trained humans who have worked hard to produce quality material. However, once your audience realizes your content is phony and inaccurate, you have lost the trust of your consumers and therefore, their business.

Businesses want to set themselves apart from the competition. One way they can do this is to use original writing written by qualified writers.

Quality writing strengthens trust with your audience. Don’t cheapen your message or brand by using someone else’s content.
